HOUSE COMMITTEE PASSES HOUSE BILL 112!
The House Committee on Student Accountability voted to pass House Bill 112, sponsored by Rep. Chrissy Sommer, by a vote of 8 - 0. Please thank Chairman Bryan Spencer, and members: Herman Morse, Vic Allred, Ingrid Burnett, Ann Kelley, Brad Pollitt, Matt Sain and Brenda Shields.
This bill requires school districts to establish a state-approved gifted program if 3% or more of the students are determined to be gifted. Districts with average daily attendance of 350 or fewer students are not required to have a teacher certificated to teach gifted education, but any teacher providing gifted instruction without a gifted-teaching certificate must participate in six hours per year of professional development regarding gifted services.
Next step: After moving through a House Rules Committee, the bill will be placed on the House Calendar for debate by all 163 members of the House of Representatives. This will most likely be at end of March or early April, so you have plenty of time to make your calls to all Representatives in your District.
