Third grade today went outside at the beginning of class to have exploratory time while it was cool outside and to release some of their energy. After running around and connecting with our classmates, we started our writing prompt and discussed it in our circle time.
Our prompt and discussion today was: If you were to help someone in need, what would it be? Everyone expressed their ideas of helping someone using empathy (putting themselves in someone else's shoes). We then had a discussion about what Ms. Love is planning to help others. Ms. Love is planning to go to the Food Bank soon. We will pack food that will help the Buddy Pack system. Ms. Love will have more information about the trip soon as she is trying to solve transportation before planning a date.
Students went to work on their Google Classroom answering a survey and writing about their thoughts about the Morenet Mill trip. The Everfi Digital Citizenship program is up and rolling! Students have been challenges to read and listen to the simulation to write better passwords and figure out which website is safer to use: is it an HTTP or HTTPS site?
As students are working through the simulation on Everfi, they are learning how to make better choices now while using the internet, texting and social media in the future. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Students may access the program at home as well, but I would like for them not to get far ahead as we talk about the problems they had to solve.
Thanks so much and have a wonderful week!
5th Grade TAG today:
We decided to go outside before we entered the classroom today. We wanted to enjoy the cool weather before it got too hot!
After enjoying the outdoors for about 15 minutes, we went to the classroom and begin our writing prompt. Our prompt was to discuss what we enjoyed working with at Morenet. We then shared our favorite robots and computer programs in our Socratic Circle. We were in a deep discussion for over 30 minutes! Students are still excited about what they discovered while at Morenet and it warms my heart!
After our deep discussion, we logged on to our Google Classroom and Everfi Digital Citizenship. Students were about to take a survey about Morenet and write about their experience a little bit more on Google. Students have finished up the wireless communication and are moving toward the virtual world within Everfi. We had a discussion at the end of class about sending photos of any kind to others and how their is a digital stamp on all photos. Being safe about sending photos to those we don't know will keep us safe in the long run. I am very proud of my 5th grade group and how they are willing to share their thoughts about digital safety in our discussions.
While in discussion about our Morenet trip, students brought up the City Museum Field trip from last year and are wanting to go again. I explained that I am working on a Service field trip and a advocacy field trip at the present time. Possibly we could do a trip to the City Museum at the end of the year without a bus and have parents car pool? This is a thought and we can ponder this as I don't think I will have enough funds for another bus trip.
It's great to be a SAFE Bulldog Pirate!
6th grade TAG Class topic today was about technology safety in the future. Students reflected on this writing prompt at the beginning of class:
Do you feel that technology should be locked down tighter to become safer in the future or should it remain the same as it is today? Defend your reason(s) of Why it should or should not be locked down.
After writing in their composition books, we sat in our Socratic circle to discuss what each person wrote and took turns expressing our thoughts to each persons ideas. Students came up with great ideas to help keep others safe from predators in the future. We also talked about how to lock down our own social media devices to keep our personal identity safe.
After our discussion, students expressed their thoughts, ideas and reflections on Google classroom more in-debt as we had so much to talk about within our circle.
It's great to be a safe Boonville Pirate!
Today we took a survey on Google Classroom about our field trip to Morenet, signed up on Class Dojo and reflected on what we love about field trip, working with Everfi and TAG. Students were so sweat today and expressed how much they loved TAG and what we have been doing in the classroom. I am very fortunate to have such pleasant and caring students in the classroom. We will be moving forward next week into the beginning stages of computer fundamentals and coding.
Today in TAG we worked with our Kubo robot. We learned how to set up the directions for Kubo to use along with repeating the steps without the directions. We also worked on the Everfi Digital Literacy and Responsibility "choosing a computer" module. We are working through the tough definitions together.
Students reflected on their field trip to Morenet Mill yesterday as adiscussion and reflection writing on Google classroom and theirComposition books. Sixth grade felt that the trip was a successand would like to have the Cue Robots, Cubletts, and Spherorobots in their classroom. Students felt that these robots had morecoding options than the virtual reality, but realized that the virtualreality was developed through coding for us to experience.
Ms. Love is on a mission to find funding for these items to shareamong all the TAG students. If you have suggestions, please letme know.
Today in TAG, we wrote about our experience while at our Morenet Mill field trip and we discussed how we could use those devices to learn coding in our Socratic Circle. Students expressed ideas of how we could incorporate more patterns, maps, control directions of robots, adding more sounds, lights and movement, connecting other blocks to contribute to the other blocks and having virtual reality to explore where most can't go, such as a volcano. Students contributed valuable ideas to the discussion and Ms. Love is documenting those ideas to help us have those devices in the classroom.
Students had there self-expression time to freely explore building, designing or creating.
We ventured back into our logging in to Google Classroom and the Everfi Digital Citizenship program. Several Students were stuck on the post testing for Choosing a computer. Frustration set on as they tried to answer the questions so they could pass and go forward to the next simulation, but they were able to get through and learn from the missed question and move forward. Most of the Students are on the next simulation about:Wireless Communication and how to be responsible with cell phones and how to pick a cell phone plan, the dangers of cell phones and driving and how to be a helpful passenger of those driving and texting.
We had a productive day in TAG today and earned a letter, "F" toward our compliment party. Once we have the word, "Gifted" on the board, we will decide on our award party.
Have a wonderful rest of the week!
We had an amazing time at the Morenet Mill Monday and Tuesday! Students had fun learning how to program robots to perform steps. The sequencing of steps is a very important process of coding. I heard the students talking today and they said, "this didn't feel like learning, but I sure did learn a lot with what we did today." I can't wait to hopefully buy some of these devices in the future for the students because their hands on learning was extremely meaningful today.
Thank you for allowing them to participate. If you have not viewed all of the photos from the past day, please do. The photos and videos show the students extremely engaged.
Thank you again for your support and help with the TAG program.
Today in TAG we worked on our writing, had free self-explore time, discussed our new love of certain foods, worked on our new KUBO robot, worked on the Everfi "choosing a computer" simulation, and wrote about our experiences today on Google Classroom. Our TAG time together was well spent.
3rd grade today learned how to sign into our new Google Classroom and our new digital citizenship program called, EVERFI. This program will help students make good decisions for themselves and their friends when it comes to computers, being safe online and communication with others. Today students learned that creating a safe loggin and password means that you can't use your name and creating a password according to the site rules. Students were asked to write down their password in their composition books for safe keeping when we forget the new unique password. Students reflected what they learned on Google Classroom at the end of the class period.
You may see photos on Class Dojo during our class time today of them having their self-explore time and reading/listening/problem solve during their time on Everfi. They all look very serious trying to solve the problem don't they?! We are working very hard to be respectful to the others while they are talking/teaching as we miss a lot of important information. The class earned the letter "i" today as they did such a great job in the beginning while I was explaining the log in process with Google Classroom.
Reminder of the field trip next week. We meet next Monday at the DB building out front at 7:45, after bus drop off. Please be prompt as we are on a tight schedule. Please bring a sack lunch, we will eat outside the building for 30 mins at 11:00 and return to our fun with Morenet at 11:30. We will leave around 1:15, to return to DB in time for bus departure.
As always, please feel free to contact me via text, email or Dojo messenger if you have any questions.
