So happy to see the third graders today! It's been awhile since we have seen one another. I apologize for my absence last week, I believe a stomach bug captured me.
We began our day with a writing prompt of: Make a T chart and put all of the BOLD codding terms on one side and the Weather terms on the other side: (Code, Sequence, Command, Condition, Program, and Programmer. Weather, atmosphere, thunder, lightning, electricity, and air pressure. ) We questioned the fact of why they are being compare? Are there similarities? What are they?
Students were quite baffled at this question. We watched a quick video about how the weather is in a cycle and how thunder and lighting were always in a sequential manner. I saw the light bulbs start to go off at this point! I wanted students to make the connection that the weather and coding are similar because they both cannot produce the outcome without producing in a certain order. What comes first, the lighting or the thunder, when we talk about weather? We thin watched another quick video about "conditionals" in coding.
What comes first, the "If" or the "Else" in coding? Can the coding be produced in any order or does it have to be in an algorithm for the computer or robot to understand the command? The discussion was a hit and we made more connections in understanding coding.
We moved on to more coding by designing an Animated Name in CSFirst and Scratch. This activity is part of the "Hour of Code" along with funding for "Donors Choose."
The students finished up this activity today and Ms. Love share their work on the big screen for all to see.
I am very proud of the students accomplishments thus far. They have meet many challenges not only with coding, but also how to solve many problems while working online with Google Classroom and working through the sign-in issues with Scratch and CSFirst. Technology can be fickle at times and we just have to "refresh" or "restart" to get the program to do what we need it to do.
Thank you for sharing your child and I will see them next week!
