Ms. Andrea Love Art and Gifted Educator
Second graders were ready to roll today! I picked everyone up and we went straight to our writing prompt of: What is your favorite color? Why is it your favorite color? How does it make you feel? Students stood up to the board and explained how they could change the question to make it look like their answer by taking out the "what" and making it start with "My" and drop a few letters to make it say, "My favorite color is" and then we continued with the rest of the prompt. They ended up with a great outcome! We have been practicing this strategy for quite some time and they are becoming the teacher now. So proud of them and their growth!
After our writing prompt we played a game called, "Cool Cash Bingo." Students had a blast spinning the wheel, identifying the coins, adding up the coins and looking to see if they had a bingo card with the amount they had on the spinner. "I don't have .51 cents, Ms. Love has it, darn!" After someone got the first two Bingo's, we stopped the game.
After the game, we had our self-exploratory time. Students played with a Tic Tac Toe puzzle, or built a bridge for 15 minutes. They wanted to continue but we needed to move on to the Everfi Digital Citizenship module. Students worked on the module for 30 minutes and worked through a few tough decisions, but they succeeded through the challenge.
Lastly, students got to meet our robot, Kubo. He is similar to the Cubetto robot from Morenet. Students loved hooking the arrows together to direct Kubo to a destination. This process is called sequencing and the beginning of Algorithms for coding. We will be moving more towards the coding very soon. Small gradual steps to prevent overloading the kiddos is my plan.
